The Ajnala blast that claimed the lifetime of a minor boy and left two others significantly injured brings to the fore straightforward availability of potash at grocery outlets. Often, potash is used for fireworks throughout non secular processions or for finishing up minor blasts to maintain birds away from fields.

Investigations are on to establish the pansari store proprietor, from whom Mohit — the suspect — procured it. Preliminary investigations revealed that Mohit took the 2 boys to his home to grind potash for making powder. The victims had been grinding it in an iron-made mortar and pestle (hamam dasta). Grinding potash in iron ignited a spark that led to the blast. Manoj Thakur, SP (D)

Potash (potassium nitrate) is banned for open sale. A sure amount is allowed for making hearth crackers that, too, after fulfilling sure situations. However its straightforward availability at grocery outlets has raised severe questions.

Now, the police have been searching for the grocery retailer proprietor, from the place the suspect procured potash which was for use for fireworks after the volleyball event being organised on the Kotli Kazia village in Ajnala.

SP (D) Manoj Thakur stated investigations had been on to establish the pansari store proprietor, from whom Mohit — the suspect — procured it. “Preliminary investigations revealed that Mohit took the 2 boys to his home to grind potash for making powder. The victims had been grinding it in an iron-made mortar and pestle (hamam dasta). Grinding potash in iron ignited a spark that led to the blast,” he stated.

Whereas Mohit was arrested on Saturday solely, motion can be initiated towards the grocery store proprietor from whom they procured potash, Thakur stated.
